Refresh skills and verify competence

MHE Training UK provides on-site forklift refresher training for previously trained operators across mainland UK. Each refresher course is matched to the truck, workplace risks and reason for retraining, with theory and practical assessment.

When refresher training is appropriate

Refresher training may be needed after unsafe practice, an accident or near miss, a change of equipment or workplace, a long period without operating, or when monitoring shows that an operator’s knowledge or technique has deteriorated. Employers should not rely only on a calendar date: supervision, risk assessment and operator performance matter.

If a candidate has no credible evidence of previous training, has been away from the equipment for a long time, or cannot demonstrate the expected foundation skills, a longer experienced-operator or novice route may be more appropriate.

Forklift refresher course duration and group size

For many rider-operated counterbalance, reach and VNA categories, a refresher course is typically 1 day for up to 3 candidates. Other machines and working conditions can require a different plan. We confirm the category, candidate history and course length before booking.

Refresher, conversion or longer training?

Situation Likely route to review
Previously trained on the same machine and still regularly operating Refresher training may be suitable.
Moving to a substantially different truck category Conversion training should be considered.
No credible training record or weak foundation skills Experienced-operator or novice training may be more appropriate.
Long period away from operating or serious deterioration in technique A longer route may be required after reviewing competence.

What your forklift refresher course includes

  • Review of responsibilities, site rules and the operating risks relevant to the machine.
  • Pre-use inspection, defect reporting and correct shutdown procedure.
  • Observation of current habits so unsafe shortcuts can be corrected.
  • Structured practical exercises using the site’s equipment and normal operating environment.
  • Theory and practical assessment, with a clear training record for the employer.

Forklift refresher training price

In-house MHE training is charged at the public rate of £300 per training day. No VAT is added. A standard one-day refresher course is therefore £300 for the course, subject to the machine, site and candidate route being suitable.

Counterbalance, reach truck and other refresher courses

Refresher training is available for counterbalance forklifts, reach trucks, VNA trucks, telescopic handlers, order pickers, sideloaders and multidirectional trucks, T1 vehicle-mounted lift trucks, pallet and stacker equipment, overhead cranes, scissor lifts and other agreed MHE categories.

Before booking

Provide each candidate’s previous certificate or training record where possible, the machine make/model/category, last regular operating date and the reason refresher training is being arranged. Read when refresher training is needed for an employer-focused decision guide.

Refresher training should match the reason for retraining

A useful refresher course is not simply a shortened novice course. The starting point is why the employer believes retraining is needed. An operator returning after a long break may need different attention from someone whose daily observations show repeated bad habits, and a person moving to a different site may need emphasis on unfamiliar traffic routes, racking, gradients or load types.

Where previous competence cannot be demonstrated, the correct answer may be a longer route rather than forcing the candidate into a one-day refresher. That decision is made before the course so the training day is realistic for both the operator and the employer.

What employers should check between formal courses

  • Whether operators are following the site’s safe operating procedures and traffic controls.
  • Whether pre-use checks are being completed and defects are being reported promptly.
  • Whether unsafe shortcuts, excessive speed, poor observation or poor load handling are developing.
  • Whether the equipment, attachments, loads, racking or workplace layout have changed.
  • Whether an accident, near miss or period away from operating indicates that competence should be reviewed.

Supervision and monitoring remain important after training. A certificate records training and assessment at a point in time; it does not replace day-to-day management of operator performance.

Forklift refresher training FAQs

Can refresher training be completed on our own truck?

Yes, where the truck is serviceable, suitable for the category being trained and available with a safe practical area. Using the employer’s own equipment helps the course reflect the controls and working environment the operator actually uses.

Is refresher training only for counterbalance forklifts?

No. Refresher training can be arranged for counterbalance, reach, VNA and many other MHE categories. Browse Machines We Train On or the full course index.

Do you offer refresher training at weekends?

Yes. Weekday and weekend training is available subject to the live diary and site suitability. Check training availability and send the machine category, postcode and candidate details before booking.
