ALLMI lifting-team competence
ALLMI Slinger / Signaller Training UK delivered on-site nationwide by MHE Training UK for people who select lifting accessories, attach or detach loads, control load movement and communicate with a lorry-loader operator. Novice and experienced routes are available, with weekday and weekend dates subject to the live diary.
ALLMI Slinger / Signaller training UK
This course is relevant where a person is responsible for preparing a load, choosing and checking lifting accessories, attaching or detaching the load, or directing the loader-crane operator. It is particularly important when the operator cannot see the load or landing point and relies on clear, agreed signals.
The loader operator and the slinger/signaller work as one lifting team, but their roles are not interchangeable. An operator card alone does not demonstrate competence in load attachment, accessory selection or signalling.

What candidates learn
- Responsibilities within the lifting team and the boundaries of the role.
- Recognising common lifting accessories, markings, defects and compatibility issues.
- Understanding load weight, centre of gravity, stability and the effect of sling angles.
- Selecting a suitable attachment method and protecting the load and accessories.
- Establishing a safe exclusion zone and controlling people around the lift.
- Standard signals and clear communication with the lorry-loader operator.
- Practical slinging, signalling and assessment using representative loads.

ALLMI Slinger / Signaller course duration
| Candidate route | Typical duration | Maximum candidates |
|---|---|---|
| Novice | 2 days | 4 |
| Experienced | 1 day | 4 |
| Refresher | 1 day | 4 |
ALLMI currently specifies a one-day course for experienced candidates and a minimum two-day course for novice candidates, with a maximum of four candidates on a course. Candidate experience still needs to be checked before booking so the correct route is selected rather than assuming that a shorter experienced course is suitable.
ALLMI Slinger / Signaller assessment
The ALLMI assessment process is set by ALLMI and administered by the accredited instructor. It includes theoretical assessment and a practical assessment designed to confirm that candidates can carry out Slinger / Signaller duties safely and efficiently. The course therefore covers more than hand signals: candidates need to understand lifting accessories, load characteristics, sling angles, safe attachment methods, exclusion zones and practical communication with the loader-crane operator.
Card, certificate, manual and five-year validity
Successful candidates receive an ALLMI identity card and certificate, are registered on the ALLMI database and receive the ALLMI Slinger / Signaller Manual. ALLMI states that the card and certificate are valid for five years, after which refresher training and assessment are required.

Industry recognition, EN 12999, BS 7121 and the ABA difference
The ALLMI Slinger / Signaller course is approved by CSCS. ALLMI states that its training standards are maintained through its Training Standards Committee, made up of technical and training professionals from major loader-crane manufacturers and importers, with Health and Safety Executive representation.
BS EN 12999 is the loader-crane machinery standard and is listed by the UK Government as a designated machinery standard. HSE guidance also points dutyholders to the BS 7121 series for crane safety, with Part 4 specifically addressing lorry loaders. That standards framework is different from conventional lift-truck training under L117.
“L117 is a forklift thing which the government set as a bar to train to. Our standards are recognised by the government.”
More precisely, L117 is HSE’s Approved Code of Practice and guidance for rider-operated lift trucks and is the benchmark used for lift-truck operator training. BS EN 12999 is formally designated by the UK Government, while HSE guidance recognises the BS 7121 series as an accepted crane-safety framework. ABA accreditation is highly relevant to workplace-transport and lift-truck training, but ABA accreditation by itself does not give a training scheme the same EN 12999 or BS 7121 Part 4 position for lorry-loader lifting operations.
For a fuller breakdown of ALLMI vs ABA, including lorry-loader Operator training and the distinction from forklift/workplace-transport accreditation, see the ALLMI course hub.

ALLMI Slinger / Signaller training cost
The instructor rate is £400 per training day for the course group, plus £50 per candidate for ALLMI materials and temporary certification. A maximum of four candidates can attend, with experience determining the appropriate route and duration. No VAT is added. See our ALLMI training cost guide for group examples, then check weekday and weekend dates. The full price is confirmed before booking.
Driver CPC available with eligible ALLMI training
A full 7-hour day of eligible ALLMI Slinger / Signaller training can count as 7 hours towards Driver CPC, subject to driver eligibility, DVSA approval of the course and training centre, and correct registration and recording. Driver CPC must be arranged at booking; ALLMI attendance alone does not automatically qualify.
Extra charges apply per person, per day for the Driver CPC add-on. The additional cost is confirmed before booking. Combining the training can reduce the need for separate CPC training days, saving you time and helping keep your drivers on the road.
Ask for Driver CPC when requesting your quotation. See ALLMI guidance and DVSA course requirements.
Combine the right competences
Some employees may need both operator and slinger/signaller competence because their job includes controlling the loader and working with the load. Tell us what each person actually does; we will explain whether you need Lorry Loader Operator training, Slinger / Signaller training, or separate courses for both roles.
