ALLMI Lorry Loader training UK

This course is for people who operate vehicle-mounted loader cranes, including common hook, brick-grab and specialist attachment applications where the correct ALLMI category is available. Training is built around the actual loader, controls, stabiliser arrangement, rated capacity information and lifting duties used at your site.

With MHE Training UK, you deal directly with the instructor responsible for the course from the first discussion through to the practical and theoretical assessment. The person who reviews the job is the person who arrives to deliver it.

Typical course routes

Route Typical duration Who it suits
Novice / inexperienced Normally 2 days Candidates without suitable previous loader-crane experience
Experienced Normally 1 day, subject to experience review Existing operators with relevant, current operating experience
Refresher Normally 1 day Previously trained operators requiring formal refresher training and reassessment

Candidate numbers and the final duration are confirmed against the current ALLMI scheme requirements. A shorter route is never chosen simply to reduce cost; previous experience must be relevant and supportable.

What ALLMI Lorry Loader training covers

  • Operator responsibilities, legislation, safe systems of work and the limits of the operator’s role.
  • Lorry-loader components, safety devices, controls, rated-capacity information and load-chart use.
  • Pre-operational checks, basic operator maintenance and defect reporting.
  • Siting the vehicle, assessing ground conditions and deploying stabiliser legs correctly.
  • Lifting equipment and attachments, including hook and specialist attachment applications where the correct ALLMI category applies.
  • Preparing the loader crane for use, selecting the correct configuration and planning a lift within capacity.
  • Controlled operation, load movement, placing, stowing and safe preparation for road travel.
  • Theoretical and practical assessment to the applicable ALLMI Operator course standard.

ALLMI card, certificate and five-year validity

Successful candidates receive an ALLMI identity card and certificate showing the categories achieved, are registered on the ALLMI Operator database and receive the ALLMI Operator’s Manual. ALLMI states that the card and certificate are valid for five years, after which refresher training and reassessment are required.

Compared with the RTITB-accredited ABA route: RTITB states that NORS registers trained operators for three years, after which refresher training is required to remain on the register. That gives a clear certification-cycle comparison of 3 years for RTITB / NORS registration versus 5 years for the ALLMI Lorry Loader card and certificate.

ALLMI recognition, EN 12999, BS 7121 Part 4 and the ABA difference

ALLMI Operator training is recognised by Build UK and approved by CSCS. ALLMI states that its scheme is fully compliant with BS 7121 Part 4:2010, the British Standard covering the safe use of lorry loaders, and that ALLMI is the only accrediting body specialising solely in lorry-loader training. ALLMI also states that its operator programme was written by the lorry-loader industry for the lorry-loader industry.

BS EN 12999 is the loader-crane machinery standard and is listed by the UK Government as a designated machinery standard. HSE guidance also points dutyholders to the BS 7121 series for crane safety, with Part 4 specifically addressing lorry loaders. That gives lorry-loader training a different standards framework from conventional lift-truck training.

“L117 is a forklift thing which the government set as a bar to train to. Our standards are recognised by the government.”

In precise terms, L117 is HSE’s Approved Code of Practice and guidance for rider-operated lift trucks and is the benchmark used for lift-truck operator training. BS EN 12999 is formally designated by the UK Government, while HSE guidance recognises the BS 7121 series as an accepted crane-safety framework. ABA accreditation is relevant to workplace-transport and lift-truck training, but ABA accreditation by itself does not create the same EN 12999 or BS 7121 Part 4 position for lorry loaders.

ALLMI’s training standards are developed and maintained through its Training Standards Committee, which includes technical and training professionals from major loader-crane manufacturers and importers, fleet owners and training companies, with Health and Safety Executive representation. This specialist structure is why employers specifically search for ALLMI lorry loader training, ALLMI HIAB training and accredited loader-crane training rather than generic crane instruction. For the wider comparison, see our ALLMI course hub and ALLMI vs ABA section.

Site and equipment requirements

For on-site ALLMI Lorry Loader Training, have the following ready before the course:

  • A serviceable lorry loader with the relevant documentation available.
  • A segregated practical area with suitable ground for correct vehicle positioning and stabiliser deployment.
  • Representative loads and compatible lifting accessories for the attachment category being trained.
  • A quiet area for theory, paperwork and written assessment.
  • Candidate experience details so the correct novice, experienced or refresher route can be confirmed.

If there is any doubt, send photographs of the vehicle, loader plate, controls, attachment and intended training area before booking. This helps confirm course suitability and avoids preventable delays on the training day.

Next step: check weekday and weekend training availability, review current training prices, or use the main ALLMI course hub to compare Operator and Slinger / Signaller requirements.

ALLMI Lorry Loader training cost

The instructor rate is £400 per training day for the agreed course group, plus £50 per candidate for ALLMI course materials and temporary certification. No VAT is added. Your quotation confirms the course duration, candidate charges and full total. Our ALLMI training cost guide shows one-day and two-day group examples.

Experienced operators currently trained through ABA?

If your operators can provide the required previous-training evidence, see our dedicated Move Away from ABA to ALLMI offer: one-day ALLMI experienced-operator training for up to four eligible operators for £600 total including ALLMI books, with no VAT.

Driver CPC available with eligible ALLMI training

A full 7-hour day of eligible ALLMI Lorry Loader / HIAB Operator training can count as 7 hours towards Driver CPC, subject to driver eligibility, DVSA approval of the course and training centre, and correct registration and recording. Driver CPC must be arranged at booking; ALLMI attendance alone does not automatically qualify.

Extra charges apply per person, per day for the Driver CPC add-on. The additional cost is confirmed before booking. Combining the training can reduce the need for separate CPC training days, saving you time and helping keep your drivers on the road.

Ask for Driver CPC when requesting your quotation. See ALLMI guidance and DVSA course requirements.

Do you also need Slinger / Signaller training?

Operating the loader and attaching or directing a suspended load are different safety-critical functions. If employees select accessories, attach loads or signal the operator, review the separate ALLMI Slinger / Signaller training page. You can also compare both roles in our plain-English guide.

Independent accreditation check: verify MHE Training UK and Damian Jamieson in ALLMI’s accredited training-provider directory. The listing confirms nationwide coverage and links back to this website.

ALLMI Lorry Loader Training FAQs

How long is ALLMI Lorry Loader training?

ALLMI currently sets the Operator course at one day for experienced candidates and a minimum of two days for novice candidates. Previous experience must be relevant and suitable for the experienced route; it is not selected simply because a shorter course is preferred.

How is an ALLMI Lorry Loader operator assessed?

The ALLMI assessment process includes two theoretical assessments and one practical assessment. Questions include core loader-crane knowledge as well as matters relating to the attachment category being used, while the practical assessment checks that the candidate can operate the lorry loader safely and efficiently.

How long does an ALLMI card last?

The ALLMI Operator identity card and certificate are valid for five years. Refresher training and reassessment are then required.

Is ALLMI Operator training recognised by CSCS and Build UK?

Yes. ALLMI states that Operator training is approved by CSCS and recognised by Build UK.

Do you provide ALLMI training at our own site?

Yes. MHE Training UK normally delivers ALLMI Lorry Loader training at the customer’s workplace using suitable equipment and a safe practical training area. Send the postcode, loader details, attachment, candidate experience and preferred dates before booking.

Do you offer weekend ALLMI training?

Yes. Weekday and weekend dates are available subject to our live diary and travel arrangements. Use the availability page to select all dates that could work.

Is ALLMI Lorry Loader training the same thing people call HIAB training?

HIAB training, HIAB crane training and HIAB operator training are very common search terms for lorry-loader training. ALLMI itself explains that “Hiab” is sometimes used in the industry in place of the more technically correct terms lorry loader or lorry-mounted crane, while HIAB is actually a loader-crane manufacturer. The formal training offered here is ALLMI Lorry Loader Operator training and it can apply to suitable loader cranes from manufacturers including Hiab, Fassi, Palfinger, HMF, Hyva, Atlas, Cormach, PM and others, subject to the relevant ALLMI category, attachment and course requirements.
