MHE Training UK provides on-site sideloader and multidirectional truck training for operators handling long, wide or awkward loads. Courses are planned around the specific machine, load types, workplace and experience of the candidates.
Sideloader and multidirectional truck training UK
Sideloaders and multidirectional trucks are commonly used for timber, steel, pipes, panels and other loads that can be difficult to transport with a conventional counterbalance truck. Their steering, load-bed arrangements and operating characteristics require machine-specific instruction.
Training may cover conventional sideloaders, multidirectional trucks, multidirectional sideloaders and multidirectional reach trucks, subject to the equipment available at the customer’s site.
What sideloader and multidirectional operators learn
- Operator responsibilities and machine limitations
- Pre-use inspection and defect reporting
- Steering modes and travel characteristics
- Rated capacity, load centres and stability
- Safe handling of long and wide loads
- Visibility, route planning and pedestrian awareness
- Picking up, transporting and placing loads
- Parking, shutdown and charging or refuelling
- Practical skills and operator assessment
Accredited or In-House training
Training can be planned for novice, experienced, refresher and conversion candidates. Accredited and In-House options may be available depending on the category and customer requirements.

Planning safe routes for long and wide loads
Long-load handling needs more than enough capacity at the forks. The route itself must provide adequate clearance for the load, the truck and any rear or side projection created while turning. Before practical training, we review the areas candidates normally use so the exercises reflect real corners, doorways, racking faces, pedestrian routes and storage locations.
- Confirm the longest and widest representative loads normally handled.
- Identify blind corners, narrow doors and points where the load may sweep across another route.
- Provide suitable storage or racking positions for realistic pick-up and placement exercises.
- Confirm which steering modes are normally used in open areas, aisles and approach routes.
- Keep the practical area clear of unrelated traffic while candidates are learning and being assessed.
For multidirectional trucks, operators also need to understand when to change steering mode and how wheel position affects the truck before moving. The course therefore develops observation and controlled positioning as well as basic load handling.
Sideloader course timings
For C1 and C2 sideloaders and M1, M2 and M3 multidirectional trucks, minimum training and testing time depends on candidate experience and the number of operators trained together.
- Novice: 37.5 hours at 3:1, 30 hours at 2:1 or 22 hours at 1:1
- Existing operator: 20 hours at 3:1, 16.5 hours at 2:1 or 13 hours at 1:1
- Refresher: 7.5 hours at 3:1, 6.25 hours at 2:1 or 4.5 hours at 1:1
- Conversion: 15 hours at 3:1, 11.25 hours at 2:1 or 7.5 hours at 1:1
C3 sideloaders over 15,000kg are specialist machines, so course duration is confirmed after the truck capacity, configuration, loads and workplace have been reviewed. Other unusual sideloader or multidirectional configurations are also confirmed against the exact machine and operator experience before booking.
Preparing the truck and workplace
Before the course, make sure the truck is serviceable and available with representative loads for the full practical period. Where several steering modes or load types are used, tell us in advance so the training plan includes them rather than concentrating on only one operating pattern.
Machine documentation, rated-capacity information, charging or refuelling arrangements and the normal defect-reporting process should also be available. This allows the practical session to cover the full operating cycle from pre-use inspection through load handling to safe parking and shutdown.
Arrange sideloader and multidirectional truck training
Send us the manufacturer and model, steering configuration, load types, site postcode, candidate experience and preferred dates. Training is normally delivered on your site using suitable equipment and a safe practical area.

Sideloader training FAQs
Can training use our normal long loads?
Where the site can provide suitable loads and a safe training area, practical exercises can reflect the long-load work operators actually carry out.
Do you cover multidirectional steering modes?
Yes. Training is matched to the actual machine and can include forward, sideways and multidirectional travel, wheel alignment, route planning and safe mode selection.
Is conversion training available?
Yes. Conversion training can be planned for experienced operators moving between relevant truck categories once previous training and experience have been confirmed.
