How Long Does Forklift Training Take?
Employer course-planning guide
Forklift course length depends on the machine, candidate experience, group size and workplace. A one-day course is not an appropriate answer for every operator.
Typical rider-operated course durations
| Machine | Novice | Experienced | Refresher | Conversion |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Counterbalance | 5 days | 3 days | 1 day | 1–2 days |
| Reach | 5 days | 3 days | 1 day | 1–2 days |
| VNA | 4 days | 3 days | 1 day | 1–2 days |
These are typical MHE Training UK plans for up to three candidates on suitable rider-operated equipment. They are a planning guide, not a promise that every candidate qualifies for the shortest route.
What “experienced” means
An experienced route is intended for someone with genuine, relevant operating experience but without recognised formal training on that category. A short period driving a different truck, occasional use years ago or unsupported self-reporting may not be enough. We review the evidence and duties before confirming the route.
Conversion is not familiarisation
Conversion training develops competence on a different category or significantly different machine. Familiarisation follows training and covers the employer’s particular controls, attachments, loads, layout and rules. Both may be needed, but they serve different purposes.

Why group size changes the plan
Each candidate needs supervised practice and individual assessment. Adding more people reduces hands-on time unless the programme is extended or split. The normal maximum for the course plans above is three, subject to the category and site.
What can delay a course?
- The wrong machine category or an unsafe/unserviceable truck.
- No segregated practical area, suitable loads or racking.
- Missing candidate history or a route that does not match demonstrated ability.
- Production activity preventing the required exercises.
Review counterbalance, reach and VNA course details, then use the booking checklist.
Why the exact duration can change
Minimum training time changes with the number of candidates because every operator needs enough supervised practical time as well as individual assessment. The condition and suitability of the truck, the available loads and racking, site traffic, attachments and the operator’s starting ability can also affect how efficiently the programme can be delivered.
The course should not be shortened simply because an employer wants a particular finish time. If a candidate needs more practice to reach a safe standard, the programme needs to allow for that.
Forklift course-duration FAQs
Can three novice candidates complete a course faster than the table shows?
The table is a planning guide for suitable equipment and conditions. Candidate ability varies, so the final plan should protect practical training and assessment time rather than promising an artificially short course.
Does previous experience automatically mean a shorter course?
No. The experience needs to be relevant to the machine category and reasonably current. Previous certification, operating history and the candidate’s demonstrated ability all help determine the correct route.
Can weekend training use the same course route?
Yes. The route is based on the machine and candidate, not the day of the week. Weekend delivery is available subject to the live diary and site access.
