Builders merchant MHE training
On-site ALLMI lorry-loader and forklift training for builders merchants nationwide. Courses reflect busy trade yards, customer traffic and the long, palletised or awkward loads your team handles.
Builders merchant forklift and ALLMI training UK
| Builders merchant task | Training route |
|---|---|
| Operate a lorry loader / HIAB | ALLMI Lorry Loader Operator |
| Attach, control or direct suspended loads | ALLMI Slinger / Signaller |
| General yard handling | Counterbalance forklift training |
| Long or awkward loads | Sideloader & multidirectional training |
| Delivery-site handling | T1 Vehicle-Mounted Lift Truck |
Courses can include counterbalance forklifts, sideloaders, multidirectional trucks, telescopic handlers, vehicle-mounted lift trucks and ALLMI lorry loaders. Where staff attach or direct suspended loads, Slinger / Signaller training may also be relevant.

Risks the practical training should reflect
- Customers, delivery drivers and pedestrians entering the operating area.
- Long timber, sheet materials, packs of blocks and loads with a changing centre of gravity.
- Uneven external surfaces, gradients, restricted visibility and weather.
- Loading and unloading vehicles while other yard activity continues.
- Attachments or fork extensions that change capacity and handling behaviour.
Preparing your branch for forklift and ALLMI training
Set aside a segregated training area, a serviceable machine, representative loads and the manufacturer’s information. Candidate experience should be supplied in advance. If operations cannot be isolated safely during opening hours, weekend training can reduce disruption.

ALLMI and forklift training for builders merchants
Builders merchants often need more than one training category across a branch or regional network. Yard teams may use counterbalance trucks for palletised goods, sideloaders or multidirectional trucks for long products, telescopic handlers for external storage and lorry loaders for deliveries. Where the delivery role includes operating a vehicle-mounted loader crane, start with ALLMI Lorry Loader Operator training. If staff also select lifting accessories, attach loads or signal the operator, review ALLMI Slinger / Signaller training.
Training around a live trade yard
The practical exercises should reflect the branch rather than an empty training-centre layout. Typical issues include customer cars entering the yard, delivery vehicles reversing, pedestrians walking between stock bays, long packs projecting beyond the forks, uneven external surfaces and restricted sight lines around stored materials. Training can be planned around quieter periods or weekends where this makes it easier to create a safe segregated area.
Typical builders merchant training categories
- Counterbalance forklift training for palletised goods and general yard handling.
- Sideloader and multidirectional truck training for timber, boards, steel and other long loads.
- Telescopic handler training for external storage and higher-reach work where the site uses this equipment.
- T1 vehicle-mounted lift truck training for delivery operations using truck-mounted equipment.
- ALLMI Lorry Loader and Slinger / Signaller training for vehicle-mounted loader-crane operations.
Information to send before a branch booking
Send the branch postcode, machine categories and make/model where known, attachments, candidate numbers and previous training, plus the normal loads each machine handles. For lorry loaders, photographs of the crane, data plate, controls and attachment can help confirm the correct ALLMI category before the date is agreed.
