Looking for HIAB training?

People often search for HIAB training or HIAB crane training when they need lorry-loader operator training. Successful accredited ALLMI operator training results in an ALLMI certificate and operator card; the operator card carries the CSCS logo. ALLMI explains that “Hiab” is commonly used in the industry in place of the technically correct terms lorry loader or lorry-mounted crane, while HIAB is actually a manufacturer. The accredited course provided by MHE Training UK is ALLMI Lorry Loader Operator Training, delivered on suitable loader cranes including Hiab and other makes where the correct ALLMI category and attachment requirements are met.

Nationwide ALLMI delivery from our Derbyshire base

For employers searching for ALLMI lorry loader training in Derby, see our Derby and Derbyshire ALLMI, HIAB and forklift training page. It covers local on-site training in Derby and surrounding Derbyshire areas while this page remains the national ALLMI course guide.

ALLMI Lorry Loader Operator Training

ALLMI Lorry Loader Operator Training is for people who use vehicle-mounted loader cranes to load, unload or position materials. The course combines theory, practical instruction and assessment and covers operator responsibilities, pre-use checks, safe vehicle positioning, stabiliser deployment, rated-capacity awareness, loader controls, lifting attachments, safe operation and correct stowage. For the full operator-course breakdown, certification and five-year validity information, see the dedicated ALLMI Lorry Loader Training page.

Course length and candidate capacity depend on previous experience and the training category required. Send us the site postcode, machine details and candidate experience so we can confirm the appropriate course.

ALLMI Slinger / Signaller Training

ALLMI Slinger / Signaller Training is for people responsible for preparing loads, selecting and checking lifting accessories, attaching or detaching loads and directing loader-crane movements. Training covers load assessment, centre of gravity, sling angles, lifting accessories, exclusion zones, recognised signals, communication and practical lifting exercises.

ALLMI currently specifies one day for experienced candidates and a minimum of two days for novice candidates, with a maximum of four candidates. For full assessment, card, certificate and five-year validity information, see the dedicated ALLMI Slinger / Signaller Training page.

Where a lifting operation involves both crane operators and slinger/signallers, we can help you identify the correct training route for each person.

Driver CPC available with eligible ALLMI training

A full 7-hour day of eligible ALLMI Lorry Loader or Slinger / Signaller training can count as 7 hours towards Driver CPC, subject to driver eligibility, DVSA approval of the course and training centre, and correct registration and recording. Driver CPC must be arranged at booking; ALLMI attendance alone does not automatically qualify.

Extra charges apply per person, per day for the Driver CPC add-on. The additional cost is confirmed before booking. Combining the training can reduce the need for separate CPC training days, saving you time and helping keep your drivers on the road.

Ask for Driver CPC when requesting your quotation. See ALLMI guidance and DVSA course requirements.

On-site course arrangements

Training is normally delivered at your workplace. The customer must provide suitable equipment, a safe practical training area and the facilities needed for the agreed course. Before confirming dates, we check the location, machine type, candidate numbers and experience so the booking is correctly planned.

Weekday and weekend dates are available nationwide subject to our live diary, travel requirements and site suitability.

ALLMI certification, recognition and validity

Successful ALLMI Operator candidates receive an identity card and certificate showing the categories achieved, are registered on the ALLMI Operator database and receive the ALLMI Operator’s Manual. Successful Slinger / Signaller candidates receive an ALLMI identity card and certificate, database registration and the ALLMI Slinger / Signaller Manual. ALLMI states that both schemes use five-year card and certificate validity, after which refresher training and reassessment are required.

ALLMI Operator training is recognised by Build UK and approved by CSCS. The ALLMI Slinger / Signaller course is also CSCS approved. ALLMI states that its standards are developed and maintained through a Training Standards Committee containing major loader-crane manufacturer and importer representatives, with Health and Safety Executive representation.

What is needed for on-site ALLMI training?

  • A serviceable lorry loader suitable for the course category, with its documentation available.
  • A safe, segregated practical area with suitable ground conditions.
  • Representative loads, lifting accessories and enough room to complete the required exercises.
  • A quiet space for theory, course paperwork and the written assessment.
  • Candidate experience details supplied before the course so the correct route is booked.

For a focused explanation, see ALLMI Lorry Loader Operator training and ALLMI Slinger / Signaller training. You can also meet your instructor or use the training knowledge hub.

ALLMI and workplace-transport standards

ALLMI specialises in lorry-loader and lifting-team training. ABA is a workplace-transport framework covering operator testing and equipment categories. The training route should match the actual machine and duties.

Read our full ALLMI vs ABA standards comparison for the distinction between L117, loader-crane design standards and safe-use standards, alongside our position on the 2026 ABA category changes.

Move away from ABA to ALLMI

For experienced lorry-loader operators who can prove their previous training in line with ALLMI requirements, we offer a dedicated one-day ALLMI experienced-operator campaign: up to four eligible operators for £600 total, including ALLMI books, with no VAT.

Proof of previous training is required. We confirm eligibility before booking the experienced route.
