MHE Training UK provides specialist on-site training for empty-container handlers and reach stackers. These large machines operate in demanding environments and require training that reflects the equipment, container-handling duties, traffic routes and site procedures.
Machine-specific container-handling training
Container handlers and reach stackers are not ordinary counterbalance forklifts. Their size, capacity, visibility, attachments and operating environment create different risks. Training must be matched to the actual machine and the work operators are expected to perform.
Relevant categories can include empty-container counterbalance handlers and reach stackers used for container-handling operations.
Course content
- Operator responsibilities and site operating procedures
- Pre-use inspection, safety systems and defect reporting
- Machine controls, steering and braking characteristics
- Rated capacity, stability and container weight awareness
- Spreader operation and container engagement checks
- Safe travel, stacking and de-stacking techniques
- Visibility, exclusion zones and communication
- Weather, ground and overhead hazards
- Parking, shutdown and emergency arrangements
- Practical instruction and assessment
Who the training is for
Course planning depends on candidate experience and the required category. Novice, experienced, refresher and conversion routes may be available. Accredited and In-House options are confirmed after the equipment and operational requirements have been reviewed.

Container handler course timings
For G2 Empty-Container Counterbalance handlers, minimum training and testing time depends on candidate experience and training ratio.
- Novice: 32.5 hours at 3:1, 26 hours at 2:1 or 19.5 hours at 1:1
- Existing operator: 19.5 hours at 3:1, 16.25 hours at 2:1 or 13 hours at 1:1
- Refresher: 6.5 hours at 3:1, 5.5 hours at 2:1 or 4.5 hours at 1:1
- Conversion: 13 hours at 3:1, 9.75 hours at 2:1 or 6.5 hours at 1:1
G4 Reach Stacker training is confirmed against the exact machine, capacity, container duties, operating rows and operator experience before booking.
Book container handler and reach stacker training

Container handler training FAQs
Can training be carried out on our own machine?
Yes. On-site training is matched to the actual machine, container-handling duties, traffic routes and local operating procedures.
Do you provide refresher and conversion training?
Yes. Refresher and conversion routes can be planned after previous training, experience and the required machine category have been confirmed.
What site information do you need before booking?
We need the machine type, container or load details, candidate experience, site postcode and preferred dates so the practical requirements can be checked before the course is agreed.

ALLMI and wider MHE training
ALLMI Lorry Loader and Slinger/Signaller training remains our primary accredited service, supported by specialist forklift, crane and materials-handling courses.
Reach stacker training at your workplace
Reach stacker training is planned around the actual machine, container-handling task and traffic environment used by the operator. Before a course is agreed, confirm the machine category, candidate experience, site postcode, typical container or load handling duties and the dates when the equipment can be released for training. This helps match novice, refresher or conversion training to the real operating conditions. Weekday and weekend dates are available subject to the live diary, and training can be coordinated around operational requirements where a suitable practical area can be controlled safely.
The practical area should reflect the work the operator will actually carry out, including safe travel routes, stacking or container-handling zones, visibility restrictions and interaction with other vehicles. Where more than one machine type is used, the training requirement should be confirmed before the course so the correct category and conversion route can be planned. This keeps the training focused on the equipment and operational risks that candidates will face after the course.
For reach stacker work, employers should also confirm the usual load range, stacking pattern, container sizes and any restrictions created by trailers, yard markings or adjacent operations. Candidate experience should be checked before the training date rather than assumed from job title alone. Where refresher or conversion training is requested, previous training records and the machine category help establish the appropriate route. These details reduce wasted training time and make the practical exercises more representative of the operator’s normal duties.
